Rome is about a 1hr 30min drive to Spoleto.
It's takes about the same time by train from Roma Termini Station which is a straight forward journey if you're not hiring a car.
Perugia is the closest airport to Spoleto, the biggest town closest to the wedding. It's about a 45min drive from Perugia to Spoleto.
Going without a hire car from Perugia is NOT a good option as public transport from the airport is minimal.
Hiring a car from the airport can be done via the usual websites like Europcar, Hertz, Firefly etc. The link below will take you to a comparison site to get the cheapest deal (around €200 for 8 days).
You can of course just book a car when you book your flights.
Where possible, we suggest that people try and car pool as roads and transport are.... rustic!
N.B. Make sure you have a credit card with you in the name of the person who made the booking. Otherwise they will not release the car to you, and debit cards won't be accepted!
Hiring a car is definitely the easiest way to get around. There are lots of places to visit near Spoleto. Public transport is unreliable and infrequent. If you're not a driver, or not keen on the 'wrong side' of the road, try to car pool.
Having a SatNav is the easiest option for directions…but if you run out of juice on your phone, follow the directions below.
There are some tolls on roads that take card but it's advisable to have some Euros to hand just in case.
If you are flying to Perugia Airport, go straight across the round-about just outside the airport entrance, and then take the first right at the second roundabout.
Follow the signs to Foligno and you will be on the slip road onto the SS75, a dual carriageway.
Follow the Foligno road past Spello and take the turn-off marked Spoleto, Terni and Roma. This is the SS3. Keep on that road. The dual carriageway runs out just before Spoleto.
When you get close to Spoleto you will need to follow directions to your accommodation which you should have obtained already or have available on SatNav.
If you need to go into Spoleto itself, there are two entrances from the SS3. For those coming from Perugia the first is called “Spoleto nord” and the second, through a tunnel under a castle, is called “Spoleto sud”.
From the airport, make your way to the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA – the ring road round Rome). Take exit 10 (uscita 10) which is sign-posted Firenze and A1.
Follow the E35 road for about 11-12km – to the Alt Stazione (toll station, collect ticket) and then on to the A1 and Firenze. After about 35km take the Orte turn-off (the toll is about €4.40) and head for Perugia, Terni.
After a few km, follow the signs to Terni, not Perugia (don’t take E45 to Perugia, Acquasparta otherwise you end up on the wrong side of the mountains), and after some km it will also be sign-posted Spoleto.
Spoleto is only 17km from Terni along a very windy mountainous road.
When you get close to Spoleto you will need to follow directions to your accommodation which you should have obtained already or have available on SatNav.
If you need to go into Spoleto itself, there are two entrances from the SS3. For those coming from Rome take the first entrance called “Spoleto sud”. The second entrance, through a tunnel under a castle, is called “Spoleto nord”.
Take the Ancona Line from Termini Station. It's a direct line and takes about 1hr30min.
Be sure to get off at 'Spoleto' and NOT 'Baiano di Spoleto' which is the stop before.
N.B. It usually leaves from Platform 2B which is located at the far left side of the platforms but down a long walk. It's a good 10-12min walk from the departure information boards to the platform, so be ready to stride out once they announce the train.
There is no train service from Perugia Airport. However, there is a bus service to Fontivegge Station in Perugia, which usually times its run with the arrival of flights into Perugia Airport.
N.B. The bus is not a regular service and we have never caught it. Once again... this is not a transport option we would recommend.
Then from Fontivegge Station take the Roma bound train to Spoleto.
You may need to change at Foligno but Spoleto is only a couple stops past there.
On the day of the wedding we will try to organise mini buses to and from Sustrico, the wedding venue.
It will be limited to a few pick-up/drop-off points. In the RSVP form, please let us know the name and address of your accommodation so we can build a plan to pick up as many of you as possible.
For those who can't get to the minibus, or prefer the freedom of their own wheels, here are the driving directions to Sustrico.
PS. Please let us know in the RSVP if you're planning to drive. It would really help our transport planning. Thanks!
Put 'Valle Rosa Spoleto' into google maps.
The turning off the main road is a very narrow bridge and opposite a Valle Rosa Hotel sign.
Go across it and just after you pass the Valle Rosa Hotel driveway on your left, the road splits.
Take the road heading right that's sign-posted Sustrico, then across another narrow bridge and keep going.
It quickly turns into a dirt track. It's windy with a lot of pot-holes. Follow it to the top.
On arrival someone will show you where to park on the dirt road leading up to the house.
